Overview

2020 Burgundy, both red and white, is being lauded by the Press and professionals alike as an exceptional vintage, brilliantly fresh, pure, elegant and focused. Yes, the wines are ripe and concentrated, but there is good acidity that more than brings things into balance. This, in fact, defines the Burgundy 2020 style: high acidity and high concentration.

We have put together 12 different wines from an assortment of producers for an exciting assortment of wines from various appellations of the burgundy region. Must have assortment of burgundy favorites for summer entertaining.

Capitain-Gagnerot Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru 'Les Moutottes' 2020
This vineyard has belonged to the Capitain family for generations. The vines are 68 years old (in 2014), planted in classic Aloxe-Corton oxforian limestone making 'Les Moutottes' structured, muscular and dense, with great black fruit and overall charm. Elegance and power, that describes Aloxe-Corton in general, but 'Les Moutottes' has something more. It has that Capitain finesse that is like a signature. All Capitain reds see only 10% new oak, the better to conserve their fruit and diverse terroirs. We say it again, Capitain-Gagnerot is our benchmark Pinot.

Gilles Bouton Saint Aubin 1er Cru 'en Creot' 2020
Garnet robe with bright fruits, raspberry, black currant, black cherry, seasoned with spice and coffee. Full bodied but silky with a lively fruit finish.

Domaine Jean Marechal Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin 2020
Finesse from first nose to finish.  Mineral, charcoal and fresh black cherry. Great balance, lovely acidity carries the fruit in an unbroken line through the mid-palate to an elegant full finish.

Domaine Thierry Mortet Bourgogne Rouge 'Les Charmes de Daix' 2020
Thierry Mortet produces about 6000 bottles a year of Bourgogne Rouge from six different parcels making up about 2.5 acres. This means there is great diversity in the strains of Pinot and the age of the vines, producing a wine with contour. Deep, dense and brilliant, its smoky spice opens to fresh black cherry sweet fruit with a charcoal edge. Delicious and luscious.

Domaine De Suremain Rully 1er Cru 'Preaux' 2020
Very pretty Pinot Noir from the charming 2015 vintage. This premier cru Rully from the Cote Chalonnaise throws out a range of complexity from red currant acidity to black cherry suavity. A touch of rusticity in the tannins brings out a freshness and vivacity that makes this wine approachable now, and that will make it magnificent in 4-5 years’ time.

Domaine Jean Féry Savigny lès Beaune 'Sous La Cabotte' 2020
Bright ruby-red wine with purple hues and aromas of red and black fruits, well-rounded by notes of vanilla and judicious new oak. It's all wrapped up in freshness on the palate, with well-structured solid tannins showing great aging potential. A single-vineyard village Savigny les Beaune drinks above its appellation.

Domaine Germain Pere et Fils Saint Romain 'Sous Le Chateau' 2020
This Saint Romain red is from perhaps the best-known vineyard in the appellation: Sous le Chateau’. And with one taste you will understand its justified reputation. Here’s a Pinot that is startlingly charming in its youth. Fresh, clean and delicious. Round, not a hint of green. Full, juicy fruit explodes with youthful acidity. What a mouthful. And then, there, behind all this immediate pleasure, comes a structure which tells you that you want to save a few bottles of this for the future. But that might be hard to do, given the way it’s drinking today.

Richard Rottiers Cru de Beaujolais Moulin a Vent 2020
Richard Rottiers has winemaking in his blood. He is is from Chablis, not from the Beaujolais. But he specifically searched out prime vines in Moulin-a-Vent because he knows the potential there. Yields in Moulin-a-Vent are always naturally low, making this the most powerful, concentrated and long-lived of the Beaujolais cru. In fact, an older Moulin can easily be mistaken for a Pinot Noir from the Cotes de Nuits. Here we have pure gamay fruits, black and mineral, with the distictive Moulin-a-Vent lingering violets, Six months in 'foudre' (large oak barrels) give the wine structure, finesse and fullness.

Marchand-Tawse Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2020
From the first whiff you know there is substance here. The nose is so expressive and full of black fruit. There’s great tannic structure, but well integrated. There’s charm. fresh, soft and spicy. And what you find in the nose lingers to a long delicate finish.

Agnes Paquet Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2020
A good percentage of whole grape in the maceration gives this Auxey red a delicate encapsulated burst of cherry fruit. The Auxey terroir and tannic structure on display, and the ensemble is well-structured and juicy in youth.

Domaine Pierre Thibert Bourgogne Cote d'Or 'Les Bouffales' Rouge 2020
A single vineyard Bourgogne is often a thing of wonder, a reflection of the precise terroir of the village it comes from. And this Bourgogne shouts Nuit St. Georges. A superbly positioned parcel. Blackcurrant and pepper, supple in its attack, complete through the mid-palate with a finish on fruit. Great structure, a wine that drinks above its appellation.

Chateau Cary-Potet Bourgogne Rouge 2020
A limpid ruby red that catches the light, with raspberry, red currant and even blueberry notes, this is a youthful wine that is easy to drink, full of bursting fruit and discreet tannins.
